"Double-Click" patented mechanical pencil

Idea for this novelty pencil came up in my mind while I was making a drawing, using a cheap plastic Chinese-made mechanical pencil with so called "side-click led advance system". I needed to erase few lines and realized that small eraser in the back of my pencil was almost gone. This was annoying since I hate to have interruptions during my "creative process". I just thought that instead of having a small and short eraser it could easily accommodate a longer one. There was a room inside pencil for that. But then how to pull eraser out fast and easy? And then I thought of an additional button, which could move eraser out in small increments from the rear of pencil just as button on the pencil in my hands was doing with the graphite led...

This above was one of the design versions where buttons were spread far apart.

Designing writing instruments again.

Back to designing writing instruments! Below are few quick black-and-white sketches of quite non-standard looking pens. They may be a bit too flashy for my taste. A lot depends on the manufacturing - quality of production and proper materials selection.

Day-15; Wednesday-July-1-2015; Writing instruments... again. Sharpie (kind of...) permanent markers

Here I took a swing at SHARPIE markers. Probably, one cannot find too many people in this country (possibly, in most countries), who would not be familiar with Sharpie permanent markers. I decided to make few alterations to their most well known design, without "inventing a new wheel", making sure that Sharpies will still remain

Day-13; Monday-June-29-2015; Wood... again.

Yes, wood project again. I love wood as material. It is natural, good looking and energetic. Different types of wood have different types of energy. But properly treated wood provides people with even stronger energy, often of healing and calming power.

Day-12; Friday-June-26-2015; Back to designing writing instruments-III

Design and product development at Atus Design, LLC.

Another shot at writing instruments. These are two concepts of inexpensive, but unusual in shape ballpoint pens with retracting lead. Both concepts showing over-molding, but this is just beautification and could be skipped if lower manufacturing cost is more important than market value.

This will be an addition to previous post. Some sketches of pen ideas, made by hand with markers.

Day-10; Wednesday-June-24-2015; Back to designing writing instruments

I missed two days, leaving them without any new posts - Monday and Tuesday, June 22 and June 23, respectively. I will skip the explanations and reasons, why this happened. It just did. Now I am back on track and back to designing writing instruments. This time I will post marker sketches of some of my "crazy" ideas on "flashy" pens, which, frankly I am not sure I would want myself. But something tells me that thewse designed, if manufactured, may be popular among school and college students.

Day-7; Friday-June-19-2015; Wooden bent plywood stools

I turn to bent plywood again and again. I love this material and this technology! Here I present design concepts of three-legged and four-legged stools. Some have separate top seating platform, but all of them can be used without it, just forming sitting surface by assembly of identical modules.

Day-1; Thursday-June-11-2015; Writing instruments design

 visit atusdesign website

I was designing writing instruments - pens, pencils, markers, highlighters as well as toys and various consumer products and commercial products for years. And this was years ago. An idea of running a blog and creating a design challenge for myself was brewing in my mind for a while. The idea was simple - post on my blog one design concept for a product every working day, five designs per week. First, I though it would be cool to do this for a year. But soon I realized that I cannot commit to such timeline for simple and obvious reasons - I work and travel a lot and may not have enough time every single day to create design and post it on my blog. So, I decided to make few compromises - I will start by trying to post five designs per week - that is one design every working day - for one month at first. Also, this can be any type of product design and executed in any form I may find suitable or available - hand sketch(es), marker rendering(s) or possibly CAD drawing and/or photo-realistic rendering.
I will also want to hear from visitors their opinions and, possibly, suggestions for future designs.

As a starter, here are few of my designs from the past:
These are CAD renderings of pens created for NIKE license. Unfortunately, they never went anywhere beyond CAD designs.
